This project asked how the legally required yet criminally underutilized built feature of the apartment shaft can become a space of welcoming, gathering, invitation and beautiful views.

We considered three typologies (the standard small enclosed, the small but open to the street, and the large enclosed) and designed correlated prototypical gardens. Additionally, we designed for three priorities:

Water: Introducing light with reflective properties

Plant life: Shade tolerant growth and experiential greenery

Privacy: Tradeoffs between shared space and individual life.
